How an LH Lifestyle Damascus Knife Is Made – A Behind-the-Scenes Look

For many knife enthusiasts, Damascus knives are not just tools, but true works of art. Their impressive edge retention, extreme sharpness, and unique patterns make them something very special. But how are these knives actually made? In this article, we take you step by step through the creation of a genuine LH Lifestyle Damascus knife.

1. What is Damascus Steel?

Before we get into the manufacturing process, it’s important to understand what Damascus steel actually is. Damascus steel consists of multiple layers of different types of steel: a hard, sharp steel and a tougher, more flexible steel. By repeatedly folding and forging these layers together, the combined properties create the unique Damascus steel, with outstanding hardness and its characteristic patterned appearance.

2. Design Development

Each of our knives features a proprietary, unique design. The model is created through a creative process where our designer balances form and function. The designs are developed using state-of-the-art 3D software and refined down to the smallest detail – always with the goal of achieving not only visual appeal but also perfect ergonomics for comfortable handling.

3. Selecting the Steels

For our Damascus knives, we exclusively select steels with the best properties. We combine VG-10 blade steel with SS416 stainless steel to achieve a final hardness/edge retention of 62±2 HRC. (By comparison, standard stainless steel knives typically have a hardness/edge retention of 56±2 HRC).

4. Forge Welding

The layers of SS416 and VG-10 steel are stacked, heated, and then forged together under high pressure. This process, called forge welding, is repeated multiple times. During this process, the individual steel layers fuse together, locking in their combined properties.

5. Shaping the Blade

Once the Damascus steel is forged, it is measured in 3D and shaped into the desired knife form. We pay close attention to the correct proportions of blade thickness, length, and shape to ensure the knife is perfectly balanced and comfortable to hold.

6. Hardening

One of the most critical steps in making our Damascus knives is the precise hardening of the steel. To achieve our special hardness of 62±2 HRC, we developed our own hardening process.
The blade blank is evenly heated to the so-called austenitizing temperature. Once the correct temperature is reached, it is rapidly cooled in oil in a process called quenching. This rapid cooling locks the steel structure in a hard state, creating a very hard, yet brittle microstructure.
To reduce brittleness and make the blade more resistant to breaking, it is then reheated to approximately 220°C and held at that temperature for a specific duration. This step achieves the ideal balance between hardness and toughness, ensuring long-lasting sharpness.

7. Grinding and Polishing

Next comes one of the most important steps for the knife’s final quality: grinding and polishing.
The blade blank is measured precisely in 3D to ensure exact dimensions and symmetry. A coarse pre-grind creates the basic blade shape and removes excess material. Then, a multi-step fine grind is performed by hand, guiding the blade over multiple polishing wheels with graduated grits. Burrs are then removed using tanned leather. This process creates a fine grind angle of 15° per side, producing an extremely sharp yet stable edge.
Finally, polishing gives the blade a brilliant finish and highlights the characteristic Damascus pattern.

8. The Handle

The handle is the last component to be attached. We use only high-quality solid wood, and this step is carried out entirely by hand. The handle is shaped manually into an ergonomic form so it fits comfortably in the hand. To protect against moisture and dirt, the wood is finished with a special, durable lacquer.

9. Quality Control

After completion, each knife undergoes a thorough quality control process. This multi-step inspection is carried out carefully by experienced professionals by hand, ensuring even the smallest irregularities are identified and corrected. This guarantees that only Damascus knives meeting our high standards in sharpness, craftsmanship, and design leave our workshop.
